چکیده

There exists some inconsistence regarding the true residual stress profiles by hard turning and grinding AISI 52100 steel (62 HRc). This study aims to clarify the pressing issues for five surface types: hard turned fresh, hard turned with a white layer, ground fresh, ground with a white layer, and as-heat-treated. The key findings are: (i) hard turned fresh surfaces produce surface compressive residual stress and subsurface maximum compressive residual stress, while ground fresh surfaces only generate surface maximum compressive residual stress; (ii) hard turned white layer surfaces generate a high tensile stress in the white layer, but has highly compressive residual stress in the deeper subsurface than the hard turned fresh surfaces; (iii) hard turned white layer surfaces change the basic shape of residual stress profiles, while ground white layer surfaces do not; (iv) Tensile residual stress in hard turned white layer surfaces is higher than that the ground white layer surfaces. However, the residual stress for the ground white layer does not become compressive in the subsurface; and (v) Machining is the deterministic factor for the resulting residual stress compared with heat treatment.

The Basic Relationship between Residual Stress Profile Patterns and Fatigue Life of Precision Machined Surfaces in Rolling Contact

The characteristics of residual stress (RS) profiles and their effects on rolling contact fatigue life for precision turned and ground surfaces with a white layer (WL) are very controversial. The key findings of this study are: (a) The basic RS profiles by a sharp tool can be fundamentally changed by a turned WL but not a ground WL; (b) The hook shaped RS profile of a turned surface may have ab...

Numerical Solution of Seismic Wave Propagation Equation in Uniform Soil on Bed Rock with Weighted Residual Method

To evaluate the earth seismic response due to earthquake effects, ground response analyses are used to predict ground surface motions for development of design response spectra, to compute dynamic stresses and strains for evaluation of liquefaction hazards, and to determine the earthquake induced forces that can lead to instability of earth and earth-retaining structures. Most of the analytical...

Experimental Study of the Residual Stresses in Girth Weld of Natural Gas Transmission Pipeline

In order to achieve integrated condition in the girth welding of high pressure natural gas transmission pipelines, the weld zones and its surrounding area should have good mechanical properties. Residual stresses are an important defect especially in the girth welding of the pipeline. In this study, two API X70 steel pipes (with spiral seam weld) of 56 inches outside diameter and 0.780 inch wal...

Finite Element Modeling of Residual Stress Profile Patterns in Hard Turning

Hard turning, i.e., turning hardened steels, may produce the unique “hook” shaped residual stress (RS) profile characterized by surface compressive RS and subsurface maximum compressive RS. However, the formation mechanism of the unique RS profile is not yet known. In this study, a novel hybrid finite element modeling approach based on thermal-mechanical coupling and internal state variable pla...

Selfconsistent Evaluation of Residual Shear Stress Profiles near Ground Surfaces

The presence of large residual shear stresses near ground surfaces are often revealed by x-ray diffraction analysis’. With the X-Ray-Integral-AJethod(RIM)Z it is now possible to determine the depth profiles of strains and stresses as a function of the true depth below the surface. However, any shear stress component parallel to a free surface must be zero at the surface itself Therefore, the de...
